love this new template, and this new blogger dashboard. make me want to write again. though i know nobody's gonna read. which is a good thing it turns out. don't want anyone i know to read. kinda embarrassing.

finally i got it. know who's behind all this kind of agenda of stopping to adopt a map-indicated frontage for the internet forum. it is the admin himself. thought he's not opposed. thought it was those from the city that's next to beijing was opposed to this, cause their city is too close to beijing. nope. just the admin. the reason he gave me was just that it doesn't look good. why just let us know earlier. he kinda of yell at me, make me feel quite uncomfortable.

same thing goes with another netizen, a so called online friend. thought he was a nice guy. from a good school, knows a lot, and was fair to other cities, including my hometown. lol i was totally wrong. he was actually very mean and venomous towards mine, since he's from another city very close to mine. a competing city, although kind of uncompetitive on his part for being such a small city and uninfluential throughout the history. they are catching up though. that's why they, those people from that city, are kind of ignoring my hometown and try very hard to throw some mud on mine. shame on them, and on that netizen. no such thing as FairPlay in their mind. everyday they just compare GDP or city proper size or average resident income. how very meaningful a life to live.

everything's not simple. just found out how dark and complicated the chinese wikipedia is. just like how personal relationship could be in china.

wuhan metro all planned routes

recently i developed my interests in drawing metro diagrams, mostly for the metro in my home city. then i finally finished this, the system map of wuhan metro including all planned routes. i spent several nights in it, and really enjoyed drawing. i think there are a lot of room for improvement, but for the time being, i'll leave it as it is.
unfortunately, the map is still in chinese. i promise to translate all the confirmed and actually under construction routes (1,2,3,4,6,8) into english in the near future, so remember to check it out later this year.

the new U. S. consulate in Wuhan is slow in action

it opened in 2007, and promised to start visa service two years later. but now almost three years passed, and no action taken.
with the new consular, there is even no news about what's going on in the consulate. the old one at least posts some news once in a while, letting us know that it is up and running.
i always hoped to get visa back in Wuhan, but now impossible. i'm going back, and might never go get a u.s. visa again.

Metro systems in China

This post was written on July 12, 2010; therefore the information was accurate up to this date.

By browsing urbanrail dot net, I found out that the three most comprehensible metro networks are still Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou. The other cities, such as Tianjin, Shenzhen and Nanjing, have more than one line. Other cities, such as Wuhan, Chongqing, and Dalian, have only one, and all of three are not underground lines. Chengdu and Shenyang will open their first metro line this year. Foshan, a satellite city of Guangzhou, will open another one. Xi’an will open one probably next year, another fully underground line. Chongqing and Wuhan will open more line in the following years. The number of lines opened in each individual city is in line with the hierarchy of Chinese cities, which is quite interesting. First are the three biggest centers, the so called “Tier 1” cities, namely Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Followed are the cities on the Yangtze River and the sub-center of the three, namely Tianjin, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Chongqing, and Wuhan. Tier 3, we have some regional centers such as Chengdu, Xi’an and Shenyang. Finally, some well-developed provincial capitals and good coastal cities come after, like Hangzhou, Changsha, Zhengzhou, and even Ningbo and Qingdao, cities that are neither centers nor capitals. The hierarchy is rather clear, which shows that it is still at play in the planners and governors’ mind.

Starting to have interests in buses

Parents came, and left. I felt sad for not being able to go with them, to the East Coast, to home.
Anyway, I joined the Bus-fan forum in China. I am actually astonished to find out that there are people who really enjoying buses though I've seen bus-fan shops in Hong Kong. But on second thought, it is rather understandable. Unlike subway and light rail or even tram line which are rather costly and far away from most cities, buses are vastly available in almost every corner of the world. And they have many varieties and characteristics. When the buses and route are well designed, the trip on a bus could be very pleasant. Railfans are often blaming the idea of having BRT lines instead of real rail transit. Well, BRT are not working so well when they are in a position to substitute rail transit, but there are rooms for them when the passengers and available fundings are limited.
Also, by looking at the buses one could have a sense of nostalgia since many of us who was growing up taking buses pretty much everyday when cars are still very limited. Taking buses are also very similar to other types of mass transit when compared with cars. I will keep reading the posts on the forum to see if there are anything interesting. But for now, I think the forum is a lot more unpopular than the forums of subways, metro, and railways.

How Wuhan Metro Line 2 are going so far? (In progress)

I asked myself this question often, and I don't know. I don't live in Wuhan for now, and all I get to know is through those news sites (they offer free news from their newspapers published everyday) and those online forums. Also I hear things from the official website of Wuhan Metro, although not much.
I compiled this table from the the information I collected about the ongoing construction for Wuhan Metro Line 2. The original Chinese table is at http://ditiezu.com/thread-97623-1-1.html I translated everything myself, so expect some mistakes. Future development of Wuhan Metro

July 28, 2010, Phase 2 of Line 1 completed and in revenue service.
Dec 31, 2012, Phase 1 of Line 2 completed and in revenue service. However, it is due to possible delay until some time in 2013 for the completion of Line 2 according to recent news report. Line 2 will tunnel beneath the Yangtze river.
2013, Phase 1 of Line 4 completed and in revenue service. Along with Line 2, these lines will connect Wuhan's three major passenger railway stations: Wuchang, Hankou, and Wuhan (high-speed rail).
2014, Phase 2 of Line 4 completed. Phase 2 will tunnel beneath the Yangtze river, again.
2014, Line 3 completed and in revenue service. Until then, all three cities of Wuhan will be connected by subways and elevated railways under the authorization of Wuhan Metro.

It is expected in 2017 that a phase 1 of line 8 and line 6 will also be constructed.

Fuss around the toll

Can't remember when you need to pay a toll when you want to get to the other side of the river. The toll gates changed into a year-fee (approximately 980 yuan in 2009) for Wuhan's Yangtze bridges. Now they want to collect the toll instead of the year-fee, again, for six bridges and one tunnel.

From my observation, I believe that there are more complaints than support for the so called ETC system, a system to collect your payment while driving through the toll without stopping. Something like EZpay for many toll roads here in the States.

Think about the complaints. If I have a car, and I drive to commute, I would complain too. The city of Wuhan is becoming more and more crowded with cars on the roads, many of them new cars bought by individuals. But in a Chinese city, such as Wuhan, the roads are not designed for cars. They are narrow, with many curves and crossings. Economy is getting better here, but the traffic conditions worsen every day. It would be much more favorable if they could get the people who drive to commute shift to public transportation, but given the current situation, it would be understandable if they stick to their cars. The buses are much slower, always full, with thieves and perverts, although they are getting better, but you would expect the 2012 subway anyway. Otherwise it is at least comfortable and faster to drive here.

With the stimulus and encouragement from the government towards the automobile manufacturers, cars on the roads are gonna become more and more, at an unpredictable speed. For one, I think the ETC payment could alleviate the burden on buying cars here, since you don't have to pay the year-fee anymore, and you only needs to pay when you do need to get across the river. But for traffic, I don't think it's gonna become any better. The toll gates would slow down the traffic speed no matter what, since not every car in town will have those ETC system installed in a year or two. And it is at least fair to the people who own a car. It would hardly matter to people who don't have cars, they are actually the majority here. I just hope the ETC would not slow down the traffic to a stop.

Wuhan Metro, don't really care right now

Suddenly, I don't really care much about the upcoming Wuhan Metro any more. I mean the subway, the Line 2, rather than the elevated Line 1.
Yes, I've been dreaming about it all the time, to have a real subway back at home, to travel across the Yangtze river underground, not only by car, also by rail. To slash through the crowded inner beltway, to avoid the horrible congestion on any of the existing bridge or tunnel, to get around fast and on time, just like any other subway in the world.
It's right at that time, I realized how much I don't want this subway anymore. If it is any other city, say, Shenyang or Shenzhen, or even Zhengzhou or Changsha, it's only a subway. A subterranean railway, which runs in tunnels, which does not share a single beam of sunlight, which is always crammed with people. The only difference is, when you come out of the subway, you find yourself right at where you want to go, but in much shorter time.
I use the aforementioned cities rather than Beijing or Shanghai, is that the image of subway is so deeply embedded in the image of the city a long time ago. When you mention Beijing or Shanghai, it is no wonder that you have subway all the time, a new extension or a new line doesn't mean so much to those cities. But for cities like Shenzhen or Shenyang, which does not have subway decades, or centuries ago, the subway would greatly influence how people picture or value the city as whole.
As of Wuhan, I feel like to have a subway is like in Shenyang or Shenzhen, which you have something to talk about for the upgrade of the city's image as a whole, but it doesn't change the fact that you are travelling in dark tunnels like those hundreds of other subways as well. I would miss to see the Yangtze river, the Gui and She mountains, the Yellow Crane Tower, and even the Wuchang Uprising museum, which is already out of sight if you travel in a car instead of a bus because you would drive through the new tunnel under it. I would eye on them in the congestion, and re-discover their beauties. Seeing them reassure my identity to be part of the city, and be part of the city dwellers of Wuhan.
I realize this is because when I travel in Shenzhen in the subway, I don't feel like anything in the city. It's just a subway, similar to that of Shanghai. And I recall the experience to get to know that they have a subway in Shenyang, I feel nothing at all. It's just another Chinese city which get a new subway, no business with me at all. I feel like if the Wuhan subway opens on 2012 most people would feel the same, of course the people who don't live in Wuhan or who don't care about Wuhan for some reason. I don't care much about it right now. I know it's gonna be a great help to the congestion, but I just feel like we are losing something in the great heap of construction, of modernization.

Reviewing the posts I posted here, the photos from the New Oriental School reminds me the old days I spent in Beijing studying GRE or something, to earn an opportunity to study in the US and ideally, a scholarship to support my study.

The following applying season earned me no scholarship at first, only two offers of admission. But I went to the US anyway and found one GRA later on. I am right now working, quite satisfactory for whatever I already been through. Although the second try for a better school eventually failed recently. But I did it, anyway, to study here without leaving a burden for my family.

Just now I was reading some news about the newly passed bill about more railroad funding, and Columbus residents seem very happy about this bill, for the existed gap in railroad construction right now in Columbus compared with other states. Columbus has no passenger rail service, which is very shocking to me. I do hope the day I can hop on a train to Cincinnati or Cleveland could come, and Ohio could be the railroad cross for the east coast and the middle west.

My hometown, Wuhan, is also under such a very embarrassing situation. Wuhan railroad service used to be under another city's control, Zhengzhou, and Zhengzhou spent almost all the funding on the railroad construction on its own, leaving Wuhan on a very passive place, and eventually slow down the economic development. There are no direct railroad linking Wuhan to other big cities along the Yangtze river, and inside Hubei province. Now the government of China is willing to compensate Wuhan, building high-speed rails cross in Wuhan, linking Beijing to Hong Kong north to south, and Shanghai to Chengdu from east to west. Hopefully Wuhan will benefit from this already under construction project.

日语的学习终于结束了。高级听说考会话的时候，我被晃晃君问到有什么收获。我说，认识了几个朋友。他问，几个？我说，三个。他说，少了点吧。我说，不少了。

其实上了这近两年的日本语双学位，我真的没长什么见识。很多理工科的学生，人生的理想局限在赚生活上。

老师也没有什么特别有意思的。很多都被日化的很厉害，开口闭口中国比日本差，日本比中国好。当然讲讲笑话，适度一点也好，但是有时候真的太过分了，把自己遇到的事情以偏概全，没话说了。

当然，日语方面的教学我没话说。没有他们，我可能还在中级日本语的门口徘徊，虽然现在教学结束了，我至少也被落在了中级的中间部分，通过努力可以再在高级的门口徘徊一下。。。

日语的考试全部结束之后，一个我不太喜欢的河北人叫我去聚餐。我推说家里有事没有去。他这个家伙。。。算了，不在背后说人家坏话，反正看官知道我是准备说坏话的就是了。

还有很多其他的人。值得一提的是一个武大的外交专业的和一个华工机械系，外加一个华工对外汉语的，其他人的名字可能时间久了就彻底忘了。。。他们的我可能咬咬牙还能想出来。。。我记名字就这么差

那年夏天，宁静的海

当我开始回想一部看过的好电影时，我会发现我已经把其中大部分有特色的地方都忘了，除了那对永远没法说话的恋人——他们已经哑了——以及那片给他们带来希望、激情、伤逝及平静的海。
于是我不得不找出碟子再看一遍。除了kurosawa（黑泽明）以外我认不出其他人了；片子本身已经太老了，就算它曾带来惊喜与收获，荣耀也只降落在黑泽明导演一人身上。
造就了片子的那种自始至终的宁静气氛可能确实要归功于导演一人——就我们所知，黑泽明导演的每部片子都是如此——或者不如说，如果没有他的执拗与坚持，这部骗子可以呈现出与它已经拥有的完全不同或者略有差异或者介于二者之间的某种异样：他肯定努力想让所有的剧组成员，演员、灯光、音效、音乐、冲浪特技指导等等都包括在内，来按照他的想法行事。而这么一来，毋宁说，将本来的每个人的自然天性所可能展现出的奇迹之碰撞全部扼杀在摇篮状态中，而只出现了黑泽明君一人的想法。
没有发生的事终究没有发生，而置我们的想象于不顾。让我们回到片子本身来。我想我已经说过了，即本片的两位主角——他们是一对恋人——聋哑人。他们不能说话，也只能靠非语言手段才能和别人交流。
于是他们的世界安静了。别人再怎样急不可耐地试图发出大量音符而通过此一行为感染这种情感的努力，在他们身上也要流于失败。让我们注意这一镜头：在片子开始不久，女主角等在公寓门口，而一个中年男子从公寓里出来时，试图搭讪的这一画面。我们没有必要知道他们究竟说了什么。几分钟后，男主角拖着一块废弃的冲浪板下来了，把气急败坏的中年男子忘在了公寓门口。
故事主要围绕着男主角的冲浪和女主角的守望展开。我想我没有把情节泄露的太多，以至于看了评论之后再去看电影会觉得不那么津津有味。男主角不断的试图驾驭海浪，而不断的失败。在失败了足够多次后，他终于掌握了要领，而在有一些难度的动作上继续失败。
大家都存心要帮他：店家卖给了他打折打的很厉害的冲浪板，而钱是他女朋友出的。有人送给他保暖泳衣和其他装备。不久他就遇到一群志同道合的人，和他一起组队去参加冲浪比赛，并且获得了胜利。成功和满足的喜悦一个接一个地接踵而至，仿佛在给幸福敲响警钟。
那片宁静的海洋不久就把男主角给吞噬掉了，留下了哭不出声的女孩在沙滩上一个人继续守望。
